Mirrors

January 27, 2009

Regarding the notion of voice actors practicing using mirrors that came up in recent conversation…

If someone wants to use a mirror in their spare time to help them practice, if it somehow gives them positive reinforcement, that’s fine. But I think it’s like a training wheel, which should be lost as soon as possible. I don’t feel one should be obsessing over your physical appearance for a voice only performance. Yes, physical posture, and movement do affect the voice, but those professionals who use it use it as a tool to inform their sound; they certainly don’t care how they look while doing it, or if it’s the same as how they practiced in their mirror. The notion that one needs to be actively watching yourself to take note of such changes in the way you sound I disagree with completely.  Orchestrating one’s performance around how you look, as opposed to allowing the physical expression of a character to emanate from you is a sure way to lead to a mechanical performance. Just because you look a certain way, does not mean you will sound right. This is why we look strange when we work, because our facial and bodily expressions do not always look correct and even ridiculous, because the bottom line is it’s how you sound, not how you look, and whatever extent one goes to achieve that goal is fair game. This is why active listening and actual DOING is infinitely more important in syncing up your auditory perception with how you utilize your instrument.
